|03:20 pm - Landslides in Sourthern China|
Recently, in the past few weeks, there had been severe flooding in Southern China due to heavy rains. Around the time I came to Beijing there was a major landslide/mudslide in the Zhouqu area due to the rain that has, thus far, killed over 1100 people with many hundreds more missing. Tomorrow has been declared a national day of mourning for these victims and all entertainment has been suspended for the day. In recent days more rain has caused more landslides across the southern provinces causing rescue work to be extremely difficult given the already hard-to-navigate terrain in the area.
Much like for the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, Premier Wen Jiabao has already visited Zhouqu to direct rescue efforts first hand and PLA relief workers have been deployed.
