08:46 pm - It's the Moon Fesitval Tonight!

静夜思 (李白)

Quiet Night of Rememberance (By Poet Li Bai)
In front of the bed there's the light from the moon,
On the floor it seems as if there's a layer of frost.
Raising my head I see the bright moon,
Lowering my head I remember my homeland.

                                                                               <--Moon Cakes
The Moon Festival is suppose to be celebrate with one's family.  On this night, everyone in the family gathers to gaze and admire the moon as they eat moon cakes.  The roundness of the moon symbolises a family united (the word for reunion in chinese is also the word for circle)and on this night, the moon is always in its full phase.  For the first time, I am celebrating the Moon Festival away from home, and so, when I look outside my window at the perfectly round moon I think of my mom, my dad, and all my relatives in China that I've met on my summer trip.

The poem above, written during the Tang Dynasty, is very famous, so famous that just about every chinese person knows it and even someone like me who's lived in north america for 12 yrs remembers it by heart.  It is about someone who, like myself, is away from home on this day and on this quiet night, as he gazes at the moon, he remembers his homeland.

For me, my homeland is China, but my true home, is in Canada.  On one continent I have friends that i've spent yrs with and care for me very much.  They've helped me through many tough times and even now continue to encourage me as I stress about university.  They've shared endless fun times with me late into the night, staying up to watch anime and tenimyu.  On the other continent are my blood relatives, ppl whom share a part of my DNA.  Even after 12 yrs of separation they welcomed me with open arms when I visited.  Thank you all of you, for your friendships and kindness I thank you.  And to everyone else whom I've met through the internet, you know who you are, I want you all to know I'm thinking about you on this night. <3<3<3
