11:33 am - Ontario's provincial election 2007
Canadian politics up ahead (actually...not even Canadian, Ontario politics), uninterested personnel heads up.

I just realized I didn't post anything about the provincial election that happened...was it two weeks ago?  Back on Oct. 10th anyway.  Not that there's really much to write about, the Liberal's win was pretty much predictable, though that majority kind of took me by surprise.  I think maybe it's the backlash from the frustration people are feeling towards the Conservative federal government?  Stephane Dion (the leader of the Liberal Party) had a chance to oppose the throne speech a few days ago and start another general election, but decided against it since that'd mean 3 general elections in 4 years and apparently Canadians are getting pretty sick and tired of them (though if you ask me if another general election meant kicking the Conservatives out I'm all for it.  I don't know about Dion that much since he's pretty new on the scene but aside from the fact that he seems a bit dull everything else I've heard about him I like...as much as a politician can be liked...Pierre Trudeau excepted).

The only thing though was that I really wish the MMP (Mixed Member Proportional) system went through so we can change this stupid First-Past-The-Post system we've had for a century.  Although I guess even with more representatives it doesn't mean the representation will improve...as a matter of fact I'd bet good money that it'd just be more politicians playing the politics game and wasting tax payers' money...but hey, at least there's the CHANCE that one or two good ones will slip in amongst all the rotten ones.  That referendum was so biased, the McGuinty government (meaning Dalton McGuinty, premiere of Ontario before and after the election) did everything they could to block any advertising or promotion of the MMP system so a lot of voters went in there and got blind-sighted by it, not knowing exactly what the heck this MMP thing was and figured 'hey, since the system we have now hasn't collapsed for a century, it can't be that bad, so let's play it safe a keep it :D'  Grrr...

Everytime an election rolls around, provincial or federal, it's always the same problems that comes up.  Everytime it's like voting between dumb, dumber and dumbest.  The same parties, the same ideas, the same ineffective solutions, the same promises that everyone knows will get broken as soon as they get elected.  We need a breath of fresh air on the political scene...I think most of  the interesting and charismatic people stay away from this field though...it's too...murky? Muddy?  Swampy?  Charisma-drowning?  Dull and death-from-frustration inducing?

Current Mood: blankblank

Love it...yeah, the only reason the election system change proposal was shot down was b/c it would just further complicate the electoral process...MMP system, in theory, is a good representation system, but since the Executive is dominant, the HOC( House of Commons) is powerless regardless of how few/many members it has. I was finding it a little strange that you didn't post about this sooner...-James

More choice, fairer results, stronger representation

Our current system is winner-take-all. This generates cut-throat politics where power is the only issue. With only two-and-a-half parties in the Leg, voters have few real choices. We can see from experience in Germany and New Zealand that MMP generates a more consensual type of government and a more civilized style of politics. Coalition government leads to a more issues-based politics and is more conducive to electing women and minorities.

Hey~ Hang in there!! Just 2 more days to go!! I finished my last mid-term today (French, ugh) and afterwards I almost weeped with joy at the prospect that for the next 2 weeks I don't have to worry about exams or assignments :DD

I don't have any special plans for Halloween, sucks that we have school that day still. Back in September sometime I told a friend I'd go trick-or-treating with her (she's from China so she's never done it before and wanted to try) but I'm a bit iffy about that since I feel a bit old for that lol (plus that's what Nov. 1st is for, massive candy sales day for the grown-ups XDD), not to mention I don't even know if she remembers since we agreed upon it way back in September. I'll probably just tell her I don't really feel like going...but dinner with everyone sounds great :D We can catch up and hang out a bit, not to mention eat some good food now that October hell's over and done with. Give me a call anytime on my cell~

Hmm...guest list...me, you, Cat, my friend (her name's Antonia btw lol) if she wants to come along...do you want to invite the Angela, Cynthia, Kagami, Takumi crowd too? Or should we keep it to just a few of us? It'd probably get kind of hectic with lots of people...and then we'd have to figure out everyone's schedules and stuff. Well anyway, let me know which way you want to go with it, can't wait to see you :D

Ok, I asked Angela and my friend Antonia and both of them are coming, now I just have to hit Bonnie and Takumi. Is Cat coming for sure?

As for restaurants...hmm...I'm good with anything really. I know Angela and them generally only eat in Chinese restaurants, maybe we can take them somewhere else? Kelseys, Swiss Chalet, St. Hubert, something along those lines? It's up to you :D
