|06:21 pm - 霸王别姬|
To my Chinese friends on my f-list, have you all seen this movie? English named "Farewell My Concubine" based on the famous Chinese Opera by 梅兰芳/MeiLanFang, the movie is based in Chinese contemporary historical times and follows the life of two Chinese Opera students from the time they studied the art together all the way to when they became famous performers. Then the Japanese attacked, followed closely by the Cultural Revolution and their lives got turned upside down.
Through all the chaos, the boy who performs the female role of YuJi in the opera (since back then both male and female roles were performed by males) finds himself actually falling in love with his partner, however his feelings were not reciprocated and his partner ends up marrying a high-class former-prostitute.
In real life, the actor for the boy who performs as YuJi is famous Hong Kong actor Leslie Cheung/张国荣. Ironically enough, Leslie was homosexual in real life. This movie came under the spotlight when Leslie committed suicide a few years ago. I've seen it a few times and own the dvd, and even though usually I don't have much taste for movies revolving around the Chinese contemporary historical era, I found this one strangely alluring.
Yesterday, while surfing through a Chinese mp3 download site, I came across the theme song for 霸王别姬 (the movie), sung by Leslie. It's a really really good song, and his voice is really soft and gentle, perfect for such a melancholy piece:
Leslie Cheung, poor guy. He died ironically- he commited suicide b/c his bf cheated on him right? Man, it's been years. I have one of his movies "Happy Together" Him and Tony Leung. I've been meaning to give it up, but don't know anyone who'd like it. Would you want it? I could mail it out to you.
Oh, and I'm downloading that song. Thanks! I missed Chinese songs- Jackie Cheung, Lii Ming, aah.. Liu Te Hua (Andy Lau)..
Oh!! That's a Chinese drama??! I heard about it just today actually on the jdramas community, but just in passing someone mentioned it so I thought it was a j-drama. I'd love to see it if you don't want it anymore =^o^= How much do you want for it??
It's a movie that was out years and years ago:http://www.lovehkfilm.com/reviews/happy_together.htm
No, you can have it :) I'll mail it to you as an exchange of the BQT dvds. it's in both Mandarin and cantonese and English subtitle as well.
oh, email me your address: firstname.lastname@example.org
xDD Nice email >D
Come to think of it, it's kind of ironic Leslie was homosexual and committed suicide, just like his character in the movie BaWangBieJi...hmmm..
Oh I guess I should ask, is it in Mandarin or Cantonese? Cuz I suck and can't understand cantonese D=
Oh and if you want more Chinese music, might I suggest:http://mp3.baidu.com/
I get all my Chinese music from there =D
ah yeah, baidu.. too bad I can't read Chinese >_>;; but thanks for the suggestion :D
I normally go to that popcorn website.. er..popcornfortwo.com or something.
Oh really?? Not even a bit? I thought you're like, fluent in it ^^;;
oh i wish T^T I only know how to say a few things from when I took Chinese class years ago >_>; But I'm Chinese songs, movies, tv series freak! Remember The Legend of the White Snake and Green Snake, Return of the Condor Heroes, the Song Go Kong (spelling?) and a bunch more...oh I wish I had a lot of money.
AH!! The Snake one!! Omg that one was sooooooo popular when I was a kid and back in China ^O^ I even bought the DVDs for it when I went back to China in 2005, although I don't have it here so I can't rip it for you ;__; But watching it after all these years it seemed really...O___o like the special effects they used were kinda...blagh DX
I don't know Return of the Condor Heroes, but that Song Go Kong one...is it Sun Wu Kong? Like from Journey to the West? I have Journey to the West too (again, not here ;__;). I love that series so much!!!
Have you heard of YangMenHuJiang? The lead actor is this really famous Hong Kong singer named Su Yiu Peng. I have that series too, if you want to see it, I can burn it and send it along with BQT =^o^=
Sun Wu Kong! Yes, the monkey one ;D
Alec Su (Su Yiu Peng) Luv him! Yes, I know Yang Men Hu Jiang.. aw will ya really? I'd love that, I'd love that!! *hugs and kisses* thank you so much! Merry Christmas 2 me! =^__^=
Oh, I'm sending you an email right now..
Whee~ *goes to read* Yeah I saw the yang series when I was back in China in 2005 and got hooked thanks to all the cuties in there *o* Argh I've got so much Chinese dramas at home, but only 3 or 4 that I brought with me to Uni *regretregret* dammit D=
Most of the ones I have are like...older ones with at least a bit of historical value since my mom bought them for me when I was younger to try and make me keep the Chinese culture, like Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Shui Hu, Dream of the Red Chamber, Dong Zhou Lie Guo, Chun Qiu Zhan Guo.
Oh I also have a few Jet Li films here that he did when he was younger and unknown in the Hollywood world. Do you like Jet Li? These ones are movies so I can easily include those as well ^o^
I like Jet Li, I've seen (and owned) most his movies. I'll pass, but thank you :D
I too have a ton in Indonesia that I left with a friend.. i know.. what were we thinking huh?!
Ah, Leslie Cheung...I've heard his name floating around before. The only chinese movies I watch these days are low budget wuxia flicks. ^_^
I've only seen him in the movie Chinese Ghost Story but other than that, I'm not sure.

I've read reviews about this. And it sounds good, but often I'm scared of watching anything angsty 'cause I know I'll cry.
Oh you'll probably cry then, it's definitely angsty ^^;;

This movie and Leslie are both crazily well-known in China and I guess over the world..
I do like it. ^^
Yeah my mom told me about it ^^
Oh! I was looking for that movie during the summer, it wasn't at the video store, thanks for reminding me, maybe I can find it in Ottawa.
You can probably find it in Chinatown ^o^
